AYS Hospitality submitted an application to open a bar tavern concept on the ground floor space of the six-story mixed-use building at 122 St Marks Pl., which was formerly occupied by a grocery market, according to their liquor license application. The yet-to-be-named concept is slated to serve “Japanese cuisine,” from yakitori skewers to sashimi platters.

The hospitality team, helmed by Chef Tomo Kubo, debuted Tabetomo – which translates from Japanese to “eating buddy” – at 131 Avenue A in “the heart of East Village” toward the end of 2018.

It serves signature tonkotsu ramen pork broth that takes over 60 hours to prepare, specializing in Jiro-style. The spot is touted by top restaurant critics as having “the absolute best omakase sushi menus in New York City” (Thrillist), and “the best meal I’ve had in 2021” (Travel + Leisure).

The proposed hours of operation for the new concept are 5 p.m. to midnight from Sunday through Thursday and 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. on the weekends. It will also offer 12 tables with 24 seats and one l-shaped bar with nine seats.

Its proposed menu items range from yakitori skewers, wagyu beef tataki, sashimi platter, spicy tuna tartare, chicken wings and uni in a shell.
