Well New York, I hope you all had a happy Mother’s Day. Hopefully, you were able to take your mother somewhere special, having had the inside scoop on the latest New York restaurant openings. If your mother happens to be a big fan of dim sum, then today’s news might be of particular interest to you.
Congee Dim Sum House is a brand new Chinese restaurant from owner Meilin Liang. Envisioned as a full-service restaurant highlighting Cantonese cuisine, Congee Dim Sum House will offer a diverse array of meat, seafood, and of course Dim Sum. Congee, the dish from which the restaurant derives its name, is a rice porridge that is often served as a side in Cantonese dishes. It serves a wide variety of uses, and can be served plain, savory, or sweet, depending on the dish it is accompanying.
Congee Dim Sum House will be opening up at 207 Bowery, a space that the Liang family has owned for years. The space most recently operated as the popular Zhen Wei Fang restaurant, operated by Wei Chen and Ricky Liang, but the family has a much deeper history with the space. Family patriarch Peter Liang established Congee Village at the space in 2005, moving from the Allen Street location they had established in 1996. The restaurant would eventually be inherited by Peter’s son Ricky, who turned it into Congee Bowery, which operated for nearly 12 years and then into Hot Pot Village in 2017. While many of the concepts have come and gone, the original Congee Village still operates at 100 Allen Street, as well as an additional Flushing location.
The location at 207 Bowery is rather spacious for the neighborhood, and boasts enough space to comfortably seat 180 guests at one time. Liang is currently applying for a beer and wine license for the space, and is proposing operating hours of 10:00 AM – 11:00 PM, seven days a week. The location also features an airy outdoor space, which the restaurant intends to open for guests according to the season. The space is still a long way away from opening though, so you will need to keep your eyes peeled for further developments at the location.
