Co-owners Nick Johnson and chef Jesus Villafan opened Raíz’s doors to the neighborhood in January 2022, serving its specialty plant-based spins on Mexican fare in a fast-casual environment. It serves a range of staples including burritos, tacos, salads and bowls, and frequently offers deals including its $7 for two taco specials on Tuesdays. This month it closed its doors to make renovations. The team anticipates reopening next month once its renovations are complete. However the space has been suspiciously listed on the real estate site LoopNet since April.

Villafan was formerly the chef at vegetarian restaurant Dirt Candy in the Lower East Side. While Johnson was previously general manager of the Japanese-inspired chain Wagamama. Prior to that he worked for The Clubhouse in New Hyde Park and Bareburger.
