Owned and operated by Magda Arango, the new restaurant will be opening up at 613 9th Avenue between 43rd and 44th street (on the west side). El Cartel will be replacing Lenwich, which previously operated at 613 9th Avenue but sadly closed after the outbreak of the 2020 pandemic.

So close to Times Square, Magda is well aware of how competitive the neighborhood can be – but they’re not worried. They know that New Yorkers need a great restaurant with a unique aesthetic and a wide variety of options, and that’s exactly what El Cartel hopes to provide. A tapas restaurant is the perfect way to bring friendly, casual service to New Yorkers with radically diverse tastes.

Unlike traditional tapas restaurants that have operated in the neighborhood, Magda sets El Cartel apart with an emphasis on Columbian flavors. El Cartel is expected to serve a gamut of small Columbian plates, including fresh octopus with paprika, mixed ceviche with shrimp and tilapia, and grilled chicken breast in a creamy mushroom state. Sweet or spicy, surf or turf, El Cartel promises to a have a dish for every palate.

Magda is also sure to prioritize safety in every venture they undergo. They will be ensuring that the El Cartel staff are all trained in the latest Covid protocol in order to provide guests with the relaxed (and safe) dining experience they deserve. According to Magda, their main goal is to offer high quality dishes and provide excellent service in a friendly and warm atmosphere.
