The unique upscale, non-traditional sushi spot was opened by James Beard Award-winning chef Tyson Cole in Austin in 2003. It has since opened outposts in Houston, Dallas, Denver and Miami, with two new locations coming to Los Angeles and Scottsdale, Arizona, this year. The New York outpost will have a large dining room with 235 seats, including a glass-roof courtyard, which will be designed by the New York City-based Islyn Studio.

“[It will be] perfect for guests to enjoy a peaceful escape amidst buzzy downtown,” says Alexis Cortes, a public relations representative for Uchi.

Cole’s Hai Hospitality has also opened offshoot concepts including Uchiko, a smokehouse in Austin, Houston and coming soon to Plano, Texas, and Miami Beach; Uchiba, an izakaya-inspired cocktail bar and restaurant in Dallas and coming soon to Austin; and Loro, an Asian smokehouse and bar in Austin, Dallas and Houston.

Uchi bills itself as “a delicate balance of elevated food and impeccable service” offering “non‑traditional Japanese cuisine with signature tastings, sushi, and a seasonal omakase.”

Fan-favorite menu items include their hama chili with yellowtail, ponzu, Thai chili and orange supreme; sake tom kha with salmon, coconut, lime leaf and dill; walu walu with oak-grilled escolar, yuzupon, candied citrus and myoga; pork belly with Japanese pumpkin and pepper rosé gastrqiue; kurodai nigiri with black bream; madai nigiri with Japanese sea bream; and shima aji crudo with stripped jack, seasonal mushroom and brown butter.
