Southern Florida’s Baires Grill Looking to Replace Former Palm Outpost in Tribeca

The last applicant for the space got pushed out due to local backlash. However, this steakhouse chain is very comparable to its former occupant. Does it stand a better chance?

The Argentinian steakhouse chain, Baires Grill, is seeking the hard-to-fill-space formerly occupied by The Palm at 200 Chambers Street in Tribeca.

Prior to Baires Grill, a Caribbean fusion restaurant from Long Island called Nuvo Kitchen was looking to fill the vacant space. However, as previously reported by What Now New York, many local residents came out in full force against the concept at the Community Board meeting, arguing that it would create an untenable situation. Local blog Tribeca Citizen called the meeting “a scene out of footloose.” While residents argued that it was a nightclub, its owner Marc Celestin told What Now New York that was not the case.

Regardless, the pushback still ultimately barred the high-end Caribbean fusion concept from joining the well-to-do neighborhood. Now, a popular Southern Florida-based Argentinian steakhouse chain called Baires Grill is applying for the space. 

The team is also anticipating the launch of its first New York location at 350 W. 50th Street in Midtown, as previously reported by What Now New York, saying on its website it is “coming soon.” New York will be the chain’s first out-of-state location.

Baires Grill is a 25-year-old chain based out of Florida billed by Eater as “a casual dining experience with affordable food and friendly service.” It is currently owned by Gustavo Abudiab.

“Baires has been a go-to spot in Miami for Argentine specialties for more than two decades,” Eater says.

Its limited but diverse selection of dishes ranges from cheese boards to seafood and juicy steak cuts. It currently boasts seven outposts in the Fort Lauderdale and Miami area of the Sunshine State, with another new Miami-area outpost “coming soon,” according to its website.

Both its vibe and menu are very comparable to that of The Palm, which is a nearly century-old Italian steakhouse chain born in New York in 1926. The fine-dining chain boasts over a dozen outposts in the country, including two Florida outposts with one in Orlando and one in Miami. Its Tribeca location shuttered in late 2022.

Will this comparable steakhouse be the perfect fit for the neighborhood? Only time will tell.
