The Israeli-born chef Tomer Blechman’s flagship concept Miss Ada — a play on the Hebrew word for restaurant — is a popular Fort Greene-based brunch spot serving modern Israeli cuisine. It opened in 2017. His new restaurant Theodora is slated to offer dry-aged fish and seasonal produce with an open kitchen and wood-fire cooking at 7 Greene Ave. in Fort Greene. He also signed a lease for a space down the street, which was formerly a deli, that he intends to turn into a bakery.  He also owns Nili, a cafe in Carroll Gardens, which opened in 2020.

Blechman earned an associates degree at The Culinary Institute of America a decade before opening his first concept. He was born in Ra’anana, an affluent suburb of Tel Aviv, with his family hailing from Latvia. His grandmother, who he cites as his biggest inspiration, was a baker.

“Growing up, I used to eat a lot of street food outside and I used to eat with my friends in their house,” he tells MTC Kitchen. “It was such a small community that we could just experience everything the Jews have to offer. They all brought different flavors from their home.”
