Stand-Up Burgers is restaurant on a mission. Founded by a group of activists who want to help the world reduce its total meat consumption, Stand-Up Burgers sets out to redefine what Americans know about burgers. They believe that there shouldn’t be a divide between food, activism, and positive change, and because of that they sought to create a burger that is sustainable, vegan, and bold without sacrificing taste.

As a member of T.K Pillan’s popular Veggie Grill family of restaurants, Stand-Up Burgers is a purpose driven restaurant who puts their money where their values are by donating to numerous community and environmental causes. Stand-Up Burgers is committed to fighting for the environment and animal welfare by introducing new generations of Americans to their profound belief in the benefits of plant-based eating. In fact, every purchase of a burger generates a new donation to a local community charity partner, and soon Stand-Up Burgers will be taking their charitable ambition to New York for the first time ever.

Based out of California, Stand-Up Burger currently operates four locations across the country – two in Chicago and two in California. Now though, the brand has cultivated plenty of positive reviews and is gearing up to enter its next stage of development, currently planning their first expansion into New York. Stand-Up Burgers has since acquired the lease at 1004 Second Avenue, which boasts an impressive 3,400 square feet of space between the ground and basement levels. The location was formerly home to Memoria, a popular restaurant that operated in the space from 2018 to 2020. Before that, the space also housed David Colston’s well-known Upsider restaurant, which closed in 2018.

RIPCO Real Estate vice chairman Andrew Moger said in a press release that they are “thrilled to have brought the first the Stand-Up Burgers to NYC. Our journey with the company started many years ago when we launched the first Veggie Grill here. As the pioneer and leader in the vegan fast-casual segment, we could not ask for a more inspiring partner,” adding that “This is just the beginning for Stand-Up Burger.”

As they have only just signed the lease recently, it will be some time before New Yorkers will be enjoying Stand-Up’s signature vegan burgers and shakes. Inviting guests to both “Take a Stand,” and “Eat Like You Give A Shake,” Stand-Up Burger’s playful activism and flavorful dishes are a perfect fit for Midtown’s changing landscape.
