Red Peony is a popular Shanghainese restaurant that highlights the cuisine of Old Shanghai in a vibrant and beautifully decorated space. Founded by New York restaurateurs Connie and Eric Zhang in 2019, the two formerly ran the successful Royal Queen in Flushing. Serving up a variety of soup dumplings, pork buns, Peking duck, and king crab, the restaurant is named after the national flower of China – the red peony.

Currently established at 24 West 56th Street, Connie and the team are preparing to open a brand new location in Midtown Manhattan. Currently in the process of applying for a new liquor license for the space, the Red Peony team will be expanding into a new location at 310 West 38th Street. Operating under the name GAC Restaurant Corp, the new expansion will be helmed by Chun Qin Chen.

Like the original West 56th space, the new location is spacious and well-suited for Red Peony’s iconic design sense. With over 50 tables and inside and two different standing bars, the new location will be able seat nearly 300 guests at one time, which is quite an impressive number for a New York restaurant. The location will give Connie all the room she needs to transform the space into a proper rival for the original restaurant, and is well-equipped to host the occasional birthday and graduation parties that have become so popular at Red Peony.

The new location will be replacing Casa Nonna, a popular (and spacious) Italian restaurant that was lead by Chef Atilio Ramos. A tribute to the authentic flavors of Roman and Tuscan cuisine, Casa Nonna was known as a local haunt for theatre district workers and tourists alike, and will be a perfect new location to bring Red Peony to a brand new audience. While the team is still hard at work preparing the space and applying for the necessary licenses, you can follow Red Peony on Instagram for further details as well as occasional deals and specials.
