Sushi Mumi is a new sushi restaurant concept from owner Jing Chen Wang. Prior to opening Sushi Mumi, Wang previously operated Mojo Omakase at 177 9th Avenue in Chelsea. Mojo is a popular omakase style restaurant that offers an exclusive 15-course sushi experience prepared using time-honored traditions that began in Japan over 150 years ago. Begun in 2019, Mojo has quickly earned its position as one of the neighborhood’s favorite sushi restaurants and now its owner has turned his head to a brand new endeavor.

Wang’s latest project, Sushi Mumi, is expected to open up later this year at 130 St Marks Place. Sushi Mumi will be moving into the space that was formerly occupied by Kura Sushi, a popular chain of sushi restaurants based out of Japan. Serving up tasty bites on a revolving conveyor belt, Kura Sushi is responsible for introducing a new generation of New Yorkers to the conveyor-powered dining trend known in Japan as kaitenzushi. Sadly, the Kura at 130 St Marks Place closed down earlier in July, but plans are already in place to reopen the space as Sushi Mumi.

Envisioned as an exclusive omakase concept like Mojo, Sushi Mumi will offer a small and intimate experience, seating only 10 guests at one time. The restaurant is expected to operate from 5:00 PM – 10:00 PM, from Tuesday to Sunday, closing on Mondays. Chef Wang is currently in the process of acquiring a liquor license for the space in order to accompany his exquisite dishes with fine wines and cocktails. Unfortunately, he is still too early into development to share further details about his new concept, but you can visit Mojo Omakase in Chelsea to get a sense of what to expect in his new restaurant.

I’m sorry, but I have to leave a comment. The place that shut down, Kura sushi, is not the same sushi joint as the Kura revolving sushi chains found elsewhere.

Kura, the restaurant that shut down, was a top-notch sushi omakase run by an absolutely top-tier chef Norihiro Ishizuka.

It is sad, sad day that Kura is closed. It’s even more sad that it’s to be confused with the Kura revolving sushi chains.
