Din Tai Fung began all the way back in in 1927, when founder Mr. Bing-Yi Yang fled to Taiwan as a refugee. With only 20 dollars in his pocket, Yang founded a humble shop to sell cooking oil and named it Din Tai Fung. Eventually, when his wife began selling steamed pork dumplings, known as Xiao Long Bao, out of the shop, the dumplings quickly took over as a focus of the store. Eventually, Yang phased out the cooking oil entirely, and the restaurant we know today was born.

Today, the brand has skyrocketed to success and now operates over 170 restaurants worldwide, with American locations currently open in California, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington. Named as one of the top ten gourmet restaurants in the world by the New York Times, Din Tai Fung has even been awarded with a Michelin Star five times.

Finally, New Yorkers will soon be able to see what all that fuss is about when Din Tai Fung launches their latest expansion. Opening up at 1633 Broadway, the massive new development will cover about 26,400 square feet of space. Aaron Yang, Vie President said in a press release that, “Throughout our journey from a mom-and-pop restaurant founded in Taiwan during the 1950s into an international brand, we have insisted on maintaining a standard of quality that has served us well. These principles include our culinary facets, which has made our traditional Xiao Long Bao and Chinese cuisine unmatched.”

The restaurant will be designed by the renowned architect David Rockwell, who has designed some of New York’s most iconic restaurants in operation today, including the upcoming Moxy Lower East Side Hotel. The restaurant is currently slated to open in 2023, and you can follow the restaurant on Instagram for all your dumpling-related desires.
