Greenpoint’s 222 Franklin Street is about to start an exciting new chapter. After a little less than a year in operation Mystica closed down, but its owners aren’t done with the space. Alonso Guzman and Amy Hernandez also own Mariscos El Submarino, a Mexican restaurant specializing in Sinaloa-style raw seafood. Rather than leaving the space empty, the duo realized the potential to open a second location of Mariscos El Submarino.

What Now NY connected with Guzman and Hernandez over the phone.
“The design of this new location is exactly the same as what we did with our Jackson Heights location,” said Guzman. “A lot of our clients in Jackson Heights came from Brooklyn and asked us to open closer to them. That was one of the main reasons behind our switch of this space from Mystica to Mariscos El Submarino. There is no seafood store or restaurant like Mariscos El Submarino in the area right now.”
Dubbed by Eater NY “The Mexican Seafood Star of Queens”, Mariscos El Submarino is serving a limited menu in this interim period while renovations are underway. Guzman and Hernandez shared plans for a grand opening in early June.
“We can’t wait to see the reactions of people in the neighborhood once we have our grand opening,” said Hernandez. “A lot of people requested for us to open Mariscos El Submarino in Brooklyn, and now we are doing just that. We are hoping for a positive response to our second location and plan to open even more in the future.”
