Chef Rutsuko Koga is well known in the city as the mind behind the popular Ichibantei restaurant. Open since 2010, Ichibantei features “teishoku,” or everyday Japanese set meals, reminiscent of the kind of meals that mothers prepare for their children in Japan. Ichibantei is especially popular for fusing its signature cuisine with the soulful sounds of reggaetón, establishing a friendly East Village oasis that is perfect for after-work and late-night meals and drinks.

Now, over 12 years since launching Ichibantei, Chef Koga is now getting ready to develop a brand new concept in Union Square. Partnering up with Ichibantei manager Anton Wong, the two will be establishing a new Japanese restaurant at 100 Third Avenue, replacing the popular VNYL bar and restaurant that formerly occupied the space. Short for Vintage New York Lifestyle, VNYL was a popular 70’s themed bar and restaurant that featured 7,000 square feet of space across four floors. VNYL was led by nightlife vet James Morrisey, who is best known for operating The Late Late, which is thankfully still in operation.

The location at 100 East 12th Street is a an impressive acquisition for Koga and Wong, and is expected to be able to seat a total of 98 guests inside. The concept is envisioned as a modern Japanese restaurant, the team is not ready to share further details, as the new restaurant has not even been named yet. The company is currently operating under the name Lucky One Enterprises, but the official name of the restaurant has yet to be determined.

Chef Koga and Wong are currently in the process of acquiring a full liquor license for the space and are currently getting ready to meet with the community board. They are currently proposing operating hours of 11:00 AM – 2:00 AM from Sunday through Wednesday, and 11:00 AM – 4:00 AM Thursday through Saturday. While they are unable to share further information about their new concept at this time, you can still give them a visit and Ichibantei, which is still going strong.
