Plug Uglies is a popular Grammercy sports bar from owners Dieter Seelig and Brian Stapleton that has been in operation for over 25 years. Dieter is well-known in the neighborhood as the owner of Craft & Carry, a well-established bar and beer store that currently operates over eight locations across New York. Highlighting hyperlocal and independent craft brews, Dieter’s abundant beer expertise has helped transformed his concepts into some of the most popular operations in the neighborhood. Dieter also operated the popular Finnerty’s bar with Brian Stapleton, but sadly had to close its doors after the pandemic.

Currently operating at 256 Third Avenue, Plug Uglies is well known for its friendly staff, delicious cocktails, and 10 screens. While the owners have been wanting to expand for a while now, they finally found the perfect space and will be opening their second location at 1495 First Avenue. The new Plug Uglies will be replacing Bar Coastal, a well known East Village sports bar that operated at the space for over 22 years.

Dieter and Brian are now in the process of acquiring the necessary liquor license for the new Plug Uglies, and are proposing operating hours 12:00 PM 4:00 AM daily, seven days a week. These hours are identical to Bar Coastal’s hours, so the community board is not likely to object to the proposal. While Dieter and Brian are too early into the process to share more information, you can follow Plug Uglies on Instagram for updates on all their future endeavors.
