Essex NYC is one of the most popular brunch spots in the Lower East Side. A regular pick on Open Table Diner’s Choice, Essex’s weekend brunch is something of a New York institution. Because of its popularity though, some guests have experienced trouble getting in without a reservation. Thankfully, those problems should soon be put to rest as Essex gears up for a massive expansion of its dining capabilities.

Founded by restaurateur David Perlman in 2000, Essex has always been a pioneer of the Lower East Side. Referring to itself as “NYC’s original brunch party”, Essex was one of the first restaurants in the Lower East Side to host the all-inclusive brunch that has become so popular today. Known for their generous happy hours and boozy brunches, Essex has been the Lower East Side’s place to party morning, noon, or night.

Located in a vibrant, multi-level space in the historic Shapiro’s Winery, Essex has always attracted guests with its spacious interior and airy atmosphere. Even with all that space though, Essex has still struggled with the popularity of its brunch and encourages guests to secure a reservation before arriving. Thankfully, David and his team are planning on expanding the restaurant with a second kitchen and brand new dining room in the cellar level.

The new expansion will add 44 new seats to the dining room and significantly increase the kitchen’s speed. Adding a second kitchen is a critical part of ensuring that the newly added seats don’t bottleneck kitchen traffic and slow down wait times. The expansion is a much-needed adaptation for the post-pandemic era of restaurant operation, while Essex’s outdoor café was extremely popular, the upcoming winter months will make outdoor dining completely untenable. Thankfully David and his team have already prepared for that contingency, and you’ll be able to continue to enjoy your brunch at 124 Rivington Street, though you should still try to get a reservation if you can
