Emmy Squared Pizza was founded in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, in 2016. The brand was co-founded by owners Emily Hyland and Executive Chef Matthew Hyland, with partners Howard Greenstone and Ken Levitan. Unlike the standard New York Pizza, Emmy Squared offers guests a signature Detroit-style pizza that is marked by its square shape, crispy bottom, fluffy dough, and cheesy “frico” crust. Made with only the finest ingredients, Emmy Squared is also known for its popular burger options. Their famed double-stack burger, the Le Big Matt, was even named as one of “The Best New Burgers in NYC” by Gothamist.

Today, only six years from their initial launch in Williamsburg, Emmy Squared has earned a steadily-increasing cult-following and can now be found in eight locations across New York, Nashville, Philadelphia, Washington DC, and Louisville. In New York, there are currently two locations in Manhattan, in the East Village and on the Upper East Side, in addition to their original Williamsburg location. Now, the popular Detroit-style pizza is jumping across Broadway to Manhattan’s west side, where the team intends to open their third Manhattan location to date.

Emmy Squared’s newest expansion will see the restaurant moving into the space at 311 West 48th Street, between Eight Avenue and Ninth. The new Emmy Squared will be replacing Patzeria Family & Friends, a well-known neighborhood Italian restaurant. The restaurant sadly closed in November 2021 and the space has remained vacant since. Unfortunately, there has been no word from the Patzeria owners regarding their intentions to reopen elsewhere. The location is rather spacious though, and is large enough to accommodate a total of 70 guests, between the interior tables and single stand-up bar.

While the location is very spacious, the new restaurant does not appear to make any significant changes to the traditional Emmy’s experience. The restaurant will serve the same square pizzas and explosively flavorful burgers you’ve come to expect, as well as a robust selection of beer, wine, and signature cocktails like the Miss You Betty, Mare of Easton, and Roland Schitt. To get the necessary licensing, the Emmy Squared team is currently getting ready to meet with the community board to submit their proposal to the public. They are seeking to apply for a full restaurant liquor license and are proposing operating hours of 11:00 AM – 2:00 AM every day, seven days a week.
