Carriage House is a brand new restaurant from Philip Testa, Chris Maier, and Chef Jordan Andino. Jordan Andino is a world renowned chef, having been featured on various shows across the Food Network, including hosting “Late Nite Eats” and “Food Boat”. He also served as Executive Chef at Flip Sigi, the popular West Village Filipino taqueria.

Carriage House is described as a restaurant “that will specialize in American fine dining inspired by French techniques.” The new restaurant will focus on bringing a unique upscale experience to not only locals, but to travelers abroad who have come to the West Village to soak up its unique culture and diverse history.

The name itself is a reference to one of the more prominent features of West Village architecture. Originally a much poorer district, the West Village was known for its many stables that housed the horses of the wealthier Greenwich Village residents. As time passed and horses were phased out of public transportation, these carriage houses – or mews – became a cheap housing alternative for Bohemian artists in need of a home. Over time, these artists laid roots and the West Village soon became the vibrant cultural district we know today. Now, the many carriage houses that dot the neighborhood are a reminder of the kind of place that New York used to be.

Carriage House will be replacing the popular Portuguese restaurant Louro at 142 West 10th Street. Started in 2012 by chef David Santos, Louro achieved a positive reputation but was forced to close in 2016 anyways in response to a significant rent hike. The space has remained vacant for years since Louro left, but thankfully Carriage House is a deserving replacement. With nearly 2,000 square feet of space inside, Carriage House will be able to comfortably sit up to 68 patrons at one time. While Phil Testa and his team still have a lot of work ahead of them, expect Carriage House to open in the neighborhood sometime before next spring.
